The Russia-Ukraine crisis appears to be de-escalating, with the anouncement by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu that Russian troops will be withdrawing from the border region with Ukraine.
“Russia Orders Troops Back To Permanent Bases After Drills In Annexed Crimea,” RFE/RL (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty), April 22, 2021 (13:17 GMT).
This is good news if it is not a trick, The Soviet Union feigned a de-escalation of tensions just before it invaded Czechoslovakia on August 20, 1968. Putin feigned a relaxation of tensions just before he invaded the Crimea in February 2014.
Still, the fact that the announcement came from Defense Minister Shoigu is reassuring.
The U.S. abd NATO should not let their guard down until the troops actually withdraw and return to their bases.
Nonetheless, it is good news. Hopefully, Putin will follow through.
